In a High School Auditorium in Somewhere USA, rehearsal is underway for the
world premiere theatrical production of THE BROTHERS GRIMM - and the
Producer, a forlorn drama coach, is well on the way to a massive coronary.
Through a memo mix-up, the High School Principal is coming to see a production
of the show in less than half an hour. There’s only one small problem. There isn’t
even a script yet!
In a fit of desperation, the Producer demands the company do a run through of the
show, “Whatever it is! RIGHT NOW!” But the authors, Brothers JAKE & WILL can’t
agree on a script. Jake likes blood and guts and all that Quinten Terintino stuff,
while Will likes fluffy bunnies and happy endings. And in the ensuing fight, the
script pages get completely intermixed. Pages are swapped. And storylines are
intertwined.
It’s now Hansel & Jorinda on their way to meet Stage Mother and her two evil step
daughters - Gretel and Joringel - who’s so happy to be part of the “A” story he’ll do it
in drag.
Meanwhile, Rapunzel, who’s been demoted from ingenue to character actress,
wants her son, Prince Charming, played by a wise-guy with big time family
connections, to go to the Gingerbread Castle for a ball to meet his true love. She’s
the evil witch - Cinderella, who’s just trying to be a team player.
in editing. And the Producer is hyperventilating into brown paper bags because,
“There is no editing. IT’S LIVE THEATER.”
“There is no editing. IT’S LIVE THEATER.”
Emotions finally hit the boiling point. There’s name calling and finger pointing and
lots of “I quits.” The entire show collapses just as the Principal arrives.
It looks like all is lost.
But the Producer rallies the troops with a dynamic, stirring and incredible cheesy
speech, complete with sparklers, and the American flag. In a fevered pitch, this
crew of malcontents pulls together to give us the works of the Brother’s Grimm in
six minutes and twelve seconds. To say the show gets wacky is to miss the
chance to use words like brouhaha, bedlam, and utter chaos.
And although they don’t truly succeed, they actually find their own path to happily
ever after.
